Chakra Healing for Beginners: Balancing Your Energy Centers with Journal Prompts + Somatic Exercises

Introduction to Chakras

Trust me, I know chakra healing can sound complicated. I’m here to simplify things for you as much as possible! Have you ever felt disconnected, overwhelmed, or like something is “off” within you? It’s a feeling many of us experience when our energy centers, or chakras, are out of alignment. Whether it shows up as physical discomfort in the body, emotional instability, or lack of confidence, these imbalances can and do impact your overall well-being.

Understanding and balancing your chakras can be a game-changer in restoring harmony to your mind, body, and spirit. Chakras are energy centers located throughout the body, and each one plays a unique role in your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. When a chakra is out of sync whether in excess energy or deficient in energy, it can lead to feelings of being stuck, stressed, or ungrounded.

In this blog, we’ll explore why chakra balancing is so important, how to identify which of your chakras might need attention, and how tools like meditation and journaling can help you realign your energy. By the end, you’ll walk away with practical tools to begin your chakra healing journey – including a free download packed with journal prompts and chakra healing exercises specifically designed for chakra alignment.

What is a Chakra? Understanding the Basics

At the core of your being, there are seven main energy centers known as chakras. These invisible wheels of energy are said to be located along your spine, starting from the base of your body and extending to the top of your head. Each chakra governs different aspects of your life, from your physical health to your emotional balance and spiritual well-being, but they are also all interconnected. Chakras are where we receive, assimilate, and distribute the energy in our life.

In simple terms, chakras are the body’s energy centers – think of them as hubs that connect the mind, body, and spirit. When they are open and balanced, energy flows freely, allowing you to feel calm, centered, and in tune with your authentic self. However, when they are taking in or putting out too much energy, you may feel out of sorts, physically drained, or emotionally unbalanced.

For chakra beginners, it’s important to recognize that chakras are more than just abstract concepts – they influence real changes in your life. When one or more of your chakras are imbalanced, it can manifest in areas like stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, or even physical ailments. Everything is interconnected! And as much as it may sound overwhelming, knowing basic information about each chakra can serve as a roadmap to your healing when you notice a specific symptom. This knowledge is truly empowering!

Why Chakra Balancing is Important

Balancing your chakras is essential for living a fulfilled, healthy, and harmonious life. Each chakra is associated with a particular emotional, mental, and physical function, and when they’re not aligned, the resulting imbalances can affect your overall well-being. Why chakra balancing is important is simple: it helps restore equilibrium to your entire system.

When you balance your chakras, you invite harmony into your life, which can lead to increased confidence, better emotional regulation, and a deeper sense of peace. By bringing each chakra back into alignment, you allow your energy to flow freely, helping to release the blockages that hold you back from living fully.

Chakra Locations On the Body and Chakra Colors

Understanding where the chakra points are located on your body is essential for chakra healing. Each chakra represents a different area of your life and energy flow and is associated with a specific color, which corresponds to its unique energy and vibrational frequency.

Also, understanding the element of each chakra can help guide you towards what you need in order to bring more balance to this chakra. For example, the root chakra’s element is Earth, and its significance surrounds our safety in this world. In order to feel safer and more grounded (during an anxiety attack for example), we can place our feet on the grass or put more of our body onto the ground, such as in the yoga pose Savasana.

Here’s a breakdown of the key chakra locations on the body and their significance:

Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Chakra Element = Earth

Chakra Color = Red

Chakra Location on the Body = the base of the spine, near the tailbone.

This chakra governs your sense of stability and material security. It sets the foundation for the rest of the chakras and is about inhabiting the body, and the ability to feel fully embodied as we go about our day.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

Chakra Element = Water

Chakra Color = Orange

Chakra Location on the Body = below the navel, in the lower abdomen.

This chakra is responsible for creativity, sexuality, and emotional balance. A healthy sacral chakra enables emotional flow and self-expression.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Chakra Element = Fire

Chakra Color = Yellow

Chakra Location on the Body = above the stomach, in the upper abdomen.

This chakra influences your personal power, self-confidence, and willpower. When the solar plexus is balanced, it gives you the strength to pursue your goals.

Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Chakra Element = Air

Chakra Color = Green

Chakra Location on the Body = near the center of the chest, just above the heart.

This chakra governs love, compassion, and emotional healing. A balanced heart chakra allows connection.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Chakra Element = Space

Chakra Color = Blue

Chakra Location on the Body = at the throat.

This chakra is linked to communication, expression, wisdom and truth. It supports clear and honest communication with others and ourselves.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Chakra Element = Command Center of Elements

Chakra Color = Indigo

Chakra Location on the Body = between the eyebrows, in the middle of the forehead.

This chakra governs intuition, self-realization and mental clarity. It is a place of mental vision and spiritual awareness.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

Chakra Element = Beyond the Elements

Chakra Color = Purest White or Violet

Chakra Location on the Body = at the top of the head

This chakra connects to spiritual consciousness, enlightenment, and your connection to the Divine or Source.

As you explore each of these chakras, consider how they relate to different aspects of your life and where you may feel imbalances or blockages. Whether you’re focusing on your chakra near the heart or chakra near the stomach, identifying where the energy feels stagnant or overactive can guide your healing journey.

Chakra Blockages: What Does It Mean for a Chakra to Be Blocked?

You hear the term “blocked chakra” often, but what does it actually mean? Honestly, I don’t think of chakras in these terms when they’re unbalanced, but rather that they’re in excess or deficiency. What “chakra blockages” mean is that emotional or physical stress has disrupted the free flow of energy through the body. This can lead to imbalance, affecting everything from your mood to your health.

Here are a few examples of what I mean:

When The Root Chakra is “Blocked”: An imbalance in the root chakra can leave you feeling ungrounded, anxious, or insecure. It may be hard to feel stable in your life or confident in your decisions. Emotional symptoms might include fear or worry about your future, finances, or safety. Physically, you may experience issues with your legs, lower back, or immune system.

When The Throat Chakra is “Blocked”: An imbalance in the throat chakra can cause difficulty in expressing yourself clearly or feeling like you’re not being heard. It might lead to struggles with communication, including feelings of frustration, fear of speaking your truth, or even a sore throat. You may find it challenging to speak up in relationships, work, or personal situations.

Identifying which chakra is blocked can help guide your healing process. When you notice symptoms like these, it may be a sign to focus on balancing the energy in those areas through yoga, the elements, or the color of that chakra. Chakra healing practices, like meditation or chakra affirmations, can also help restore the flow of energy and bring harmony back into your life.

Chakra Healing for Beginners: Methods to Restore Balance

If you’re new to chakra healing, don’t worry – it’s easier to start than you might think. The quickest and easiest method to restore balance within your chakras is simply to sit! By sitting upright in a cross-legged position as if you are meditating (which you should!), you create a straight line with your chakras, helping them restore balance. This is why yoga can be so beneficial, as we focus on creating a long straight spine aligning our chakras. Techniques such as a chakra clearing meditation, Reiki, and journaling can also make a big difference. Even just spending a few minutes each day focusing on a specific energy center can help you reconnect with your body and mind, creating more peace and harmony in your life.

Chakra Reiki

Chakra Reiki is an energy healing technique that can clear blockages and promote balance in your energy centers. A trained Reiki practitioner can channel energy to specific chakras allowing energy to flow freely, helping to restore balance in both your physical and emotional well-being.

Chakra Meditations

Meditation is a powerful tool for chakra healing. Using chakra balancing meditation techniques, you can focus on each chakra and visualize it becoming clear and aligned. Meditation allows you to reset your energy, release any emotional tension, and restore the natural flow of energy within your body. You can find tons of free chakra meditations on YouTube (Brett Larkin is my teacher and personal favorite).

Chakra Journal Prompts & Affirmations for Inner Growth

Using journal prompts for chakra healing (click here to download a free guide) can be incredibly effective in helping you process and release stored trauma. By writing about your experiences and emotions related to each chakra, you can uncover underlying issues and work through them. Many times, journaling helps us connect to our subconscious which can be working behind the scenes in our every day life. Using chakra journal prompts can help you reflect on what’s holding you back and guide you in your healing journey.

Here are a couple of journal prompts from my free guide to get you started:

Root Chakra: “What fears or insecurities often come up for me regarding my safety and security? How do I feel about my body and physical existence? Are there areas of my body that I neglect or criticize?”

Sacral Chakra: “How comfortable am I with expressing my emotions? Are there emotions I tend to suppress or avoid?”

Manipura Chakra: “How do I handle criticism or challenges to my self-esteem?”

Heart Chakra: “Where am I allowing my needs to be met by someone else, instead of meeting them on my own?”

Throat Chakra: “When do I feel most confident in expressing myself? What holds me back from speaking my truth?”

Third Eye Chakra: “What fears or doubts do I have about trusting my intuition? How do these fears manifest in my decision-making process?”

Crown Chakra: “Do I minimize the spiritual connection or insight I receive in meditation? Do I allow myself to feel these experiences fully?”

Chakra Affirmations

Affirmations are a great way to focus your energy and shift your mindset. I like to record my own voice on the Parrot app, and listen to it when getting ready or in the shower. You can also find YouTube videos of chakra affirmations!

Here are some affirmation examples for each chakra:

Root Chakra: “I am grounded and safe.”

Sacral Chakra: “I am in tune with my sensuality.”

Solar Plexus Chakra: “I trust my instincts and stand in my power.”

Heart Chakra: “I open myself to love and kindness.”

Throat Chakra: “I speak my truth with confidence and clarity.”

Third Eye Chakra: “I honor and follow my intuition.”

Crown Chakra: “I am connected to the Universe.”
