Home Health : How to Create a Calm Environment at Home

Creating a home and space I truly love has been essential to my healing journey. We’ve moved more than a few times in the past six years because my husband is in the military, but with each new space I learned more about how to create a calm environment at home. This way, although our physical house changed, my family would have a space where we could come together to feel safe, secure, and at ease surrounded by things we loved. After buying our first house in Virginia sight-unseen during Covid, my husband and I donated almost everything we owned in order to move across the country and start fresh. This move was our brand new start, and decorating our home from a blank slate was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Keep reading to hear my most important tips when creating the space of your dreams.

A peaceful home impacts your family and mental health more than you’d think. Your surroundings impact your mind, which impacts behavior, stress and energy levels, and more. By creating a calm environment for your children, you’re also improving the state of their mind as well. This is an essential piece to creating a calm home! Calm children equal calm parents (more often than not). And the opposite is also true. So why not set yourself up for as much success as possible with peaceful home decor? The Importance of a Relaxing Home Environment

Think about it this way: When you go to a beautiful coffee shop, hotel, or even restaurant that feels cozy, warm, and decorated aesthetically don’t you feel better? This is why people leave their homes to work on laptops in these places. Being in these types of environments uplevel your energy, your mind, and even what you choose to wear. This is why creating a relaxing home environment is an essential piece to healing your mind and evolving into the best version of yourself.

If you’re in the depths of your healing journey, feeling like crap and working through past traumas or other issues; looking around at a messy home full of decor and furniture you don’t even like is only going to make things worse. Sure you can leave your home, go into nature and feel better. But why not bring these things to YOU instead of the other way around? Studies have shown that a clean space with less clutter has a positive impact on the brain, and the opposite is true for clutter and messiness. A cluttered and chaotic living space can contribute to increased stress and anxiety.

When we clean up our space and surround ourselves with keepsakes that have special memories, photos of the ones we love, and indoor plants that give us fresh oxygen, we feel better. It’s just natural. When we look around at messy piles, unorganized shelves, tables, and more, this has an effect on us. For most of us mamas, there is constantly a sink full of dirty dishes, landry piled to the brim, and bathrooms to clean. The rest of the house being unkempt along with all the everyday clutter is bound to have a negative impact on our minds. We can only stay on top of so many things so why not keep our surroundings organized and clean? This way there isn’t much to do there but admire the way things look.

Practical Tips to Make Your Home Calming

First step, go through EVERYTHING.

That means what you see AND what you don’t. I’m now to the point where just knowing there’s a messy drawer or cabinet impacts my mind. I want everything to feel clean and organized, because when it does, I know I feel better. It may not look pretty at first, but pull everything out so you can see what you have and get rid of the things that feel heavy or have an old energy tied to them.

Use Pinterest to decorate bookshelves, tv stands, or corners of rooms.

I type the furniture I’ll be using in my search terms and then create a board of inspiration to come back to. Or I’ll copy Pinterest inspiration completely using items I already have. You may think you don’t know how to decorate your home aesthetically, but maybe you just haven’t seen it done enough. Look at other homes and notice how things are arranged. I didn’t always know how to create an aesthetic bookshelf or wallspace. It’s something I’ve learned in time by taking note of what I notice online.

Incorporate different textures.

Incorporate fun pillows, blankets, shelves and more by paying attention to what you already have and adding something different. This is how to create a “cozy” living room or bedroom instead of a space that feels flat and unemotional. You don’t want a perfectly clean home that has no feeling to it!

Bins, bins, and more bins.

Go to Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, or Target and buy all the storage bins! I have all different types of organizational baskets from wicker, fabric, wood, bamboo, and more. You can shop them on LTK, along with so much more of my home organization favorites. These storage bins are your absolute lifesavers when it comes to creating a calm environment at home that feels clean. My children’s rooms feel clean because they have so many baskets that are organized by types of toys. A bin for dolls, mr. potato head, magnets, art supplies, books, and more. Everything has a place and kids can easily throw things back into a storage bin creating the appearance of a clean room (because it is!).

Home is Where the Heart is: Enhancing Ambiance

Like I said before, your home should feel warm and inviting to yourself and to others. Create a peaceful home that feels good by incorporating scents from candles, essential oil diffusers, room sprays, and more. Plants in every room also improve the air quality of your home and make it feel more spacious and breathable. Using sage once a week lifts the energy of your home by removing any dense stagnant energy.

This is also why I like to paint all of the walls in my house white. Think of a snowy day surrounded by the clean feel of the bright fresh fallen snow. Waking up to this makes your home appear as if it’s lit up through the windows. This is the power of white. We do paint colored walls for the children and anywhere an accent wall might add an extra touch. But for the most part our house walls are white. This also allows me to use all different types of wall decor because it won’t clash with the color of the wall.

Make Your Home Personal

I tell this story often because it’s something that I feel so strongly about when creating a calm environment at home that you love. I once worked with interior designers that didn’t want me to include any of my keepsakes because they believed they didn’t match the aesthetic they wanted for my home. They wanted me to buy all new wall decor. And quickly, which meant there would be no feeling behind any of the new home decor.

I politely declined and found a way to add my items. By finding more of my keepsakes that were similar color tones, I made them appear intentional in the space (which they were). You can add anything to a room, as long as you create an intentionality behind it. And why would you want an aesthetic home like the ones you see online that have absolutely no positive feeling behind anything in the room? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to feel like I’m living in someone else’s home. I want the joy of my life and personal experiences to shine through!

Another tip, let the kids help! My older kids help me paint, pick out their own wall decor items and organize their shelves to showcase their favorite items. It’s their space as well, so allow them to add their personal touches.
