But even though elopements are smaller, there IS still some planning involved to make sure your day is everything you’ve dreamed of. If you’re looking for an elopement to-do list that makes planning an intimate wedding simple, keep reading.

More and more couples are choosing elopements, especially in breathtaking spots like La Jolla, California. From the cliffs overlooking the ocean to the golden beaches, it’s easy to see why. How to Plan the Perfect Intimate Ceremony

Eloping may be about keeping things simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely stress-free. Whether you’re planning an elopement for two or bringing along a handful of guests, there are still important steps to take to ensure your day is exactly how you envision it. With more couples opting for a laid-back vibe and choosing scenic spots like San Diego for their elopement experience, I’m here to help you plan your dream day. So, grab your favorite drink, sit back, and let’s go through this elopement to-do list together.

1. Choose Your Location

First things first: Where are you eloping? For those dreaming of coastal views, a San Diego elopement offers it all. Whether it’s a secluded cliff overlooking the ocean or a quiet beach for that intimate sunset ceremony, San Diego has some of the most stunning backdrops for your day. You can even tie the knot at a lush garden or in a modern, unique venue. Wondering where to go? Elopement beach locations like La Jolla Tidepools or Sunset Cliffs offer gorgeous views and unforgettable photo ops. If you’re into adventure, consider hiking to a scenic overlook or renting a sailboat for a nautical vibe.

Just be sure to visit the location beforehand on the day of the week and time you plan on scheduling your elopement (especially if you live in San Diego!). Gorgeous spots can fill up with people fast and if you’re looking for something more intimate (without an audience), you want to check out the spot first.

Also, be sure to check any permit regulations for events and photographers before solidiifying the location. Some spots in Balboa Park for example, require professional photographers to have a permit in order to take photos.

2. Pick an All-Inclusive Package (or Go DIY)

Not sure where to start with planning? Many vendors offer all-inclusive elopement packages, which cover everything from photography to flowers and even officiants. If you’re looking for convenience, an all-inclusive elopement package is a great option. But, if you prefer a more DIY approach, create your own elopement to-do list from this blog with essentials like booking your venue, organizing an officiant, arranging flowers, and, of course, hiring an elopement photographer.

If you decide to take a more DIY approach, these are some vendors and details you may want to think about.

Hair and Makeup: will you hire someone or do it yourself?
Flowers: opt for a local florist or even make your own bouquet by purchasing flowers from Trader Joe’s
Rings
Marriage License: learn more about the specifics here
Officiant: become an officiant in minutes for free here
Vows
Guests: will they need chairs, transportation or parking to and from the elopement location
Timeline: plan a timeline for the day including things like getting ready, arriving at the location, first look, vows, photos with guests, cake, and anything else you want to include; this is just an estimate and to have an overall idea of how things will flow; consider sharing this with guests as well and include where parking and the ceremony will be
Afterparty: will there be one; location, food, drinks; different guests from the ceremony or the same; send out invitations
Honeymoon: that’s why you saved money on the wedding right?!

3. Hire a Professional Photographer

The right photographer will make all the difference on your big day, especially if you’re in a stunning location with golden hour lighting. Don’t forget to ask about elopement packages that include elopement pictures to ensure you get every detail captured. My elopement packages include unlimited downloads, but printing is an added price. Be sure to know what you’re paying for because some photographers only price for their time on the day of, and digital pictures and prints are an added cost altogether (this can add up quickly!). If you’re on a budget and have no problem doing the planning yourself, you can also opt to choose a professional photographer whose focus isn’t elopements. They may charge you just a typical session fee (but of course remember they won’t have the knowledge that a typical elopement photographer would).

4. Don’t Forget Your Dog!

Are you and your partner dog parents? You’ll be happy to know that many San Diego elopement locations are dog-friendly. An elopement with dogs is one of my favorite things to shoot. Whether your pup is your “best dog” or simply there to hang out, bringing them along can make your elopement even more special. Be sure to check the venue’s pet policy, and if you’re planning a beach ceremony, bring along plenty of water and shade for your furry friend. (In San Diego dogs are allowed on most beaches as long as they are on a leash, but Google your exact location to be sure!)

5. Choose Your Elopement Style

One of the best things about elopements is that they’re completely customizable. From what you wear to how you set up the ceremony, the day is all about YOU. Maybe you’re looking for a boho elopement beach wedding dress or something sleek and modern for a city rooftop ceremony. You can go as traditional or as unique as you want. Think about adding personal touches like handwritten vows, a small reception with a picnic, or even a champagne toast on the beach. If you’re looking for more elopement ideas, head to Pinterest and consider adding adventure with a hike, a boat ride, or even a helicopter ride to an exclusive spot. Any big event in life I choose to plan a moodboard filled with inspiration on Pinterest. (You can also send this to your photographer, so they understand the vibe you’re going for!)

6. Plan Your Guest List (or No List!)

The beauty of an elopement is that you get to decide how intimate or inclusive it will be. If it’s just the two of you, a simple elopement for two could be the way to go. But, if you want to celebrate with your closest friends or family, an elopement with guests allows for that personal touch without the stress of a big wedding. You could even plan an elopement and reception to celebrate afterward with a dinner party, picnic, or small gathering in a scenic location. These can take place on two different days altogether (like this couple opted for).

Just remember, in San Diego you need an officiant and at least one witness to sign the marriage license. A friend can become an officiant for free in seconds on this website (which I personally use and know is accepted by the San Diego Count Clerk). If you know someone who has become an officiant somewhere else online, just be sure to call your local County Clerk and make sure it will be accepted. Many elopement photographer are also officiants for their clients when the elopement is intimate. If more than 5 guests I recommend having a friend or family member be the officiant so the photographer can focus on photography.

Finalize the Details

With the major plans in place, the final touches will make your day complete. Think about creating a timeline for the day so that everything runs smoothly. Organize transportation, if needed, and double-check the weather forecast. And lastly, remember to take a moment and just soak it all in. It’s your day! Trust that everything will fall together perfectly, as it always does.
